St Michael and All Angels, Colwinston

example

Agatha Christie association, Wall-painting, ‘Thankful parish’, good modern glass, pre-Reformation bell

A grade 1 listed building in lovely village setting. Built 13th century although the location may be that of an earlier Christian church with its southerly, sunny aspect, inconspicuous location in a little valley watered by a stream.

Memorial in chancel to Major Hubert de Burgh Prichard, killed in Normandy, 1944. Son-in-law to Dame Agatha Christie.

Narrative wall-painting by chancel arch. Unique in Glamorgan it tells the story of St Nicholas and the baby in the bath.

Modern stained-glass by John Petts in nave window.

‘Thankful village’ one of 51 in England and Wales which received back all those they sent to fight in the Great War 1914-18.

The bell is by John Goscelin of Bristol and is one of the 5% of pre-Reformation bells in Britain.
